B.BUBIKANOVA ART PRIZE

"B. Bubikanova Art Prize" is the first exhibition of finalists of the competition for young artists named after Bakhyt Bubikanova. An independent expert commission consisting of Yulia Sorokina, Elena Vorobyeva, Inga Lace, Ulan Djaparov and Andrea Bustillos Duhart selected 11 finalists of the competition from 188 applications, whose works are presented at the final exhibition. Despite the fact that the competition was not tied to a specific topic, the jury selected works that were in tune with the creative spirit of Bakha Bubikanova.

Bakhyt Bubikanova is a Kazakh multidisciplinary artist who worked using a variety of techniques including painting, collage, photography, installation, performance and video art. Bakhyt was born in Aktobe, lived and worked in Astana; in May 2023, at the age of 38, she passed away. Outstanding among the younger generation of Kazakh artists, her works reflected the paradoxical facets of local life, combining national and global themes and depicting the reality of Central Asia.

With this competition we aim to pay tribute to the memory of the great artist Bakhyt, celebrating her support for young artists.

At the opening day of the exhibition, the selection commission from State Museum of Art named after A. Kasteev chose a work for their collection - a triptych of Madina Joldybek “Ordinary star, neutron star, black hole” (2021). For her work, Madina Joldybek received a prize in the amount of 1,000,000 tenge from the project sponsor - artistic director of the Turkestan Music and Drama Theater and producer Ainur Kopbasarova.

Also, the representative of the expert commission of the competition, Elena Vorobyeva, announced the winner of the competition according to the jury - it was the group from Bishkek “Zamanbap Art” with the installation “Kyshky Theater” (2024). The Almaty Museum of Arts will purchase the work for its collection and will also provide a prize for the authors in the amount of 1,000,000 tenge.
