ASPAN GALLERY, IN COLLABORATION WITH STEPPE, PRESENTS THE SECOND ANNUAL CONTEMPORARY ART COMPETITION NAMED AFTER BAKHA BUBIKANOVA

In 2025, Aspan Gallery will again organize the Bakha Bubikanova competition, providing artists from Central Asia with the opportunity to express themselves and present their work to a wider audience.

Artists aged 18 to 45 who are citizens or reside in Central Asia are invited to participate. Each participant or collective can submit up to three works in any technique by filling out the online-form before March 9, 2025.

The works of the finalists will be presented at an exhibition at Aspan Gallery in April 2025. The expert committee, consisting of professionals in contemporary art, will select the works that best reflect the creative spirit of Bakha Bubikanova and correspond to the given theme.

At the final exhibition, one of the works will be chosen by the Selection Committee from the Scientific and Methodological Department of the A. Kasteev State Museum of Arts for inclusion in the museum’s collection. The winner of the competition will receive a prize of 1,000,000 tenge from Aspan Gallery, and their work will become part of the largest state collection of contemporary art.

Throughout all stages of the competition, The Steppe portal will provide detailed coverage of the events and prepare special materials about each finalist for its website and social media.

The theme of the 2025 competition is "Unveiling Boundaries: Power, Identity and Body"

This year’s theme is inspired by the exploration of corporeality, identity, and social structures, which were deeply reflected in the works of Bakha Bubikanova. Her works, created in media such as performance, painting, sculpture, and video, became a powerful tool for discussing issues of gender, femininity, and power dynamics. Through her art, Bubikanova proposed a rethinking of established societal norms, emphasizing the complexity and multifaceted nature of the human experience.

Potential research directions within the theme of the competition include:

  • Deconstructing gender roles and expectations.
  • The personal and political in power structures.
  • The human body as a symbol of vulnerability and resistance.
  • The intersection of individual identity and social narratives.
  • The role of physicality and performance in overcoming stereotypes.
  • Other interpretations of the stated theme are also welcome.
