September, 2024 — November, 2024
The exhibition “Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities” began in Balkhash as part of the International Water and Climate Forum "Balkhash - 2024: Challenges and Solutions". The exhibition continues in Almaty in the Aspan Gallery space and will be available for visits until October 27. Also, as part of the exhibition, a public program of the interdisciplinary school of art and science Art Collider Balkhash x Almaty will be held on September 28-29. The Organizers of the exhibition are Artcom Platform community, Balqashqa Qamqor initiative in partnership with Aspan Gallery.
Recognizing the massive impact of the global climate crisis, the exhibition brings together artists from Central Asia, Indonesia and Australia in the practice of intercultural solidarity, caring for the fragile ecosystems of the transboundary Lake Balkhash basin.
In the “Interweaving Climate, Water(s) and Communities'' exhibition, artists deeply explore and reflect on the essential relationships between local communities and biodiversity, highlighting their role as keepers of collective memory. Water bodies are considered not simply as natural objects, but as living archives that capture histories, cultures and ecosystems threatened by change. Particular attention is paid to the continuity of technologies and rituals that help adapt to contemporary socio-economic and climatic challenges, offering possible scenarios for the future.
Recognizing the diversity of perspectives, knowledge systems, and historical contexts that shape the cultural landscape, the exhibition offers new insights into the interactions between nature and society. It rethinks understandings of water spaces, the dynamics of hydrosocial relations, and calls for a reconsideration of existing strategies through the lens of decolonial perspectives.
