Askhat Akhmedyarov

Askhat Akhmedyarov (b. 1965, village of Aleksandrovo GAI, Ural region) graduated from an art college in Shymkent, studying under the founders of Kyzyl Tractor art group Vitaly Simakov and Moldakul Narymbetov. He participated in several exhibitions of the Shymkent 'Trans-Avangard' group, but later steered away from the collective practices and moved to Astana to start his solo career.

Akhmedyarov now lives and works in Almaty. In his artistic practice he uses a variety of different techniques including painting, drawing, video, photography, installation and performance. The resulting works are multilayered and defy a single definition. Alhmedyarov’s work is inseparable from his life and social activism. In his works and actions the artist plays with ambiguity and sets a critical distance with the viewer, using irony and humour as one of his tools. Through his works, Akhmedyarov exposes the conflicts inherent in our cultural, social and political lives.
